Difficulty: 3/10-1/10. If you follow the guide 'Correctly', and watch the movie, then it will be more like a 1/10.
Assumed Knowledge: How to copy and paste, how to download programs, how to read, as well as watching a movie.
Server Base: Every one.
Modified Material: Many parts/programs on your computer, Win.rar, Moparscape Client, a server file, No-ip, *You might also need to port forward.*
II. Downloading/Installing The Most Recent Form Of Java.
Java SE Development Kit 6, also know as JDK 6. IS what most of the private servers you have played on use. To run a server, you need a form of Java. So we will be using the latest version JDK 6.
Java SE Downloads
When you go to download JDK 6. You will see this page.
Click on the download button that I circled in red, and then you will be taken to a new page. There is a part that says accept, and decline, click the accept and the page will be refreshed and then click on the download version I circled in this picture.
Click on the off line download option that best fits your system, and follow the instructions.
III. The Variables
Now we need to set the variables to allow your computer to run your server, as well as a type of client.
1.) To start off click start menu > go to my computer > right click on my computer >Click properties > then advanced.
You should see a menu such as this;
2.) Now setting the environmental variables.
Click environmental variables, the button circled in red above. Then click new under system variables. *IMPORTANT DO NOT ADD A NEW 'User Variables' ADD A NEW 'System Variable'.*
Under System Variables click the New button, and a window will pop up with two sections to fill in.
In the box that says, Variable Name and type
classpath
and for the Value, add this in
C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_01\bin
Then click ok.
Now look for a SYSTEM VARIABLE called path. Highlight it once by clicking once on it and click edit.
Rename it PATH now for the Variable Value replace the old on with this one
%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\Sy stem32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\;C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_01\bin
Click ok and then click ok on the computer properties screen.
Now it would be best if you restarted your computer now. It might help for the new version of Java to take affect.
Then that should be it for the variables.
IV. Getting Win.rar - Extracting Servers/Clients.
1.) First off, you need to get either of these programs.
(Q. What do they do?)
(A. They are programs used to extract documents that have been compressed, so that they can be redistributed on-line. When you download a file on-line. It is usually compressed. You need to extract the files so that you can use them. Just download one of the following programs, follow the setup instructions. Then go to the program you downloaded, in our case a client and server, right click it and click on the option that says 'extract' And the program should begin to extract the files to where ever the file is. When it is done, you can access the document. There is a picture of an example in this thread.)
http://rapidshare.com/files/28577165/wrar3.7corp.zip Password-www.theviperfiles.com ~ I prefer this program over the other, but either one works.
Just follow the instructions that the program provides, and you should be good .
IV. Setting Up A Client/Server. Download Free File Hosting of movies, songs, films, mp3s, games, music, and demos from PhotoJerk because it is a very reliable source to use.
It will say your download is ready at the bottom of the screen. So scroll down to the bottom and click the part that says download.
Now follow the download instructions.
Now where ever you saved your client, go to it, and start the installation part, it will take a while.
Well done! You now have a client, which enables you to play on a private server!
Now the server!
Today - 4-05-07, there are probably more then a thousand sources to chose from. From my experience most SUX! There are a few that do stand out. My favorite source would be a source called ReenScape. It is just like RuneScape, and is most likely the cleanest source so far. I have put together a list of sources that are decent servers to use, you may chose any one, it doesn't matter.
1.) - http://reendev.net/releases/121.zip -ReenScape- <- Most recent version, a very clean source. Very organized, which makes it easy to edit the server. You do have to know where to look. ~ Just click it to download it.
2.) - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=LHKND52G -Project 16 v3- A very popular source. Great for starters. This is not the most recent version. ~MegaUpload.
3.) - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ZRQA0L1M -TestScape- One of the most popular servers, most of the tutorials you read for servers are based on this server, or an edited version of it. ~ MegaUpload.
4.) - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=16KZIJK5 -PimpScape- The most popular pking server around! ~ MegaUpload.
5.) - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=W8NCP0YC -CheeseScape 80- The base of just about every source out there. ~MegaUpload.
Those are the basic servers, pick any one which you would like to try and follow the rest of the guide.
When the download is complete, the server should look similar to A stack of books. Right click on it and click the option call "extract here" and the server will start to unzip.
Congratulations you now have a server!
Example of extracting;
Now you want to play on your server? Then follow these instructions.
Once you have your server downloaded you need to extract the files. If you followed the instructions right then go to where ever you told the internet to save the server and you should see this,
Follow the instructions that are included in the picture. If you follow those instructions correctly you should have a folder called "1.4" you should rename this folder to the name you would like your server to be called.
ex. I want my server's name to be 'Bad Scape' so I will rename the folder to 'Bad Scape' so that I know what that folder is, and can find my server a little bit more easily.
Now open up your server folder and you should see a few folders, Data, scr, and server. Then there should be a .bat program called compile, and one called run.
*You will learn how to change names latter on in the tutorial.*
If you downloaded the correct version of Java, and set the variables right, then double click on compile, and a program should pop up. Give it about twenty seconds to load.
The compile, is like a save button for a server, except it is more advanced. If you make an update in the server you must use the compile after ward so that the update can take effect. If you made a mistake then the compile will tell you what you did and where, so you can easily go in and change what ever you did.
Double click on the file called compile.bat.
After about ten to twenty seconds you should get this message
Note: stream.java uses or overrides a deprecated API.
Note: Recompile with -Xlint:deprecation for details.
Press any key to continue . . .
Press any key ... and the compile will close. Then double click on run.bat. And you should get a message saying that a port has been started on port 43594.
If you get this message when you click on compile.bat Compiling...
'javac' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
Press any key to continue . . .
Then you do not have Java, or you messed up your Variables. Go back to part one and read over it again.
If you get this message in your compile
The system cannot find the path specified.
press any key to continue . . .
Then the compile is saying you did not set the variable called 'Path' correctly, again go back to part one and read the Variables par again.
Now the fun part for you, bad for people trying to help, The part where you edit your server!
I am just going to tell you how to change the name of your server here, look in the other tutorials to find some cool stuff to add to your server.
To start on changing the name of your server you need to go to your server folder, open it, then open the folder called 'Scr' . Now open the document named client.java.
Now hit Ctrl+H and a window will pop up saying "Find what:" and "Replace with:" .
In the place that says "Find what:" add the name of the server you are using, and now in the box that says "Replace with:" add the name you want your server to be called.
ex. I want the name bad scape then in the 'Replace with:' box I would add
Bad Scape
Then click on the replace all button, and there you go, the name of the server is now what you placed in the second box.
V. Setting Up No-Ip
Go to No-IP - Dynamic DNS, Static DNS for Your Dynamic IP
Now set up an account.
Now log into your account and look at the tabs close to the top page. You should see one that says "Downloads" click it and you should see this,
Now click the correct download link for your computer and click on it. Then follow the instructions.
Once you download the program successfully go back to no-ip and click on the tab called 'your no-ip' .
Now to the left of the screen you should see a column of things to chose. Look for one that says 'add' click it and this will pop up,
Now for the fill ins, where it says 'host name' add the name you want you server to be called.
ex. I want my serve to be called bad scape. Then I would put badscape in the box, it wont let you use spaces. If the name is already taken then try another . thing at the end or just go with another name completely.
ex. badscape.no-ip is taken. Then try badscape.no-ip.biz ect, or just make a new name.
*Important* Now leave the rest blank and click create host at the bottom. It should give you a confirmation message that your no-ip has been created.
Congratulations you now have a no-ip, which is part of what allows other players to joining your server.
VI. Fire Wall Exception
Now you need to create an exception for your server port in your firewall to allow other players to join.
To make your firewall allow your server to be played on, go to start then go to your the part of the start menu that says 'connect to'. Once you are on that look for your connection to the internet and right click it, then on the menu the right click pulled up click properties.
Once you click properties a new window will pop up with two tabs at the top, one will say 'General' the other one says 'Advanced'. Click on the tab that says 'advanced'. Then on the advanced tab you should see a box close to the top that says Windows Firewalls. In that there should be a box that you can click that says 'settings' click on it.
Now a new window will open called windows firewall settings. It will have three tabs at the top, click on the tab called 'exceptions'.
Now click on the option called 'add port' a small window will pop up that will ask for a name, and the port number. Fill it in with this,
port name = Yourserver name here.
Port number = 43594
Now click ok, then click ok again and then click it one last time so that all the windows are now closed.
Part 3 of IV.
Now go to where ever you saved the no-ip download, probably in your programs, and run it. there should be a small no-ip icon near the clock on the start bar. double click it and a no-ip window will open. Click the edit button at the top of the screen, and fill in the boxes with the account you used for no-ip. Click ok, and you should see a smiley face with your server ip next to it. Click the box next to the face and a green check should appear. Then that face should become happy. If this works, then congratulations! Other players should now be able to log onto your server.
VI. Port Forwarding.
This is my most hated part, because this is were most of the problems occur. If players are not able to access your server after completing parts I - IV. then you need to port forward... Luckily there is a great web site that will give you just about all of the information you need to no about port forwarding , and how to forward your own ports!
First off if find out what kind of router you are using, write it down. Now go to this site, PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall and find your router in the list. Click on your router and then a bunch of programs will pop up that you will be able to forward. *IMPORTANT* Do not click on a game, click on the word default in this sentence that should be found near the top of the page when you click on your router, "If you do not see the program you are forwarding ports for, be sure to visit our Default Guide for this router" You will be redirected to a great guide that will tell you how to redirect ports. Make sure when it asks you for a port number use 43594, that is the default RuneScape Private Server Port, the one just about everyone uses.
VII. Creating A Website For Your Server.
People who play private servers, want to see server information before they play. The best way to show them how nice your server is, is to create a website for it, and throw information, pictures, and updates out to people who want to view it.
There are thousand of hosters for sites, the most easy to use one for me would be FreeWebs. They offer free websites, under a pre domain name, and explain how to edit the site.
Another site that I found to be useful, would be geocities. You need to have a Yahoo account to create a free site. This site is a step up from FreeWebs, but can become tricky if you are new to Html.
For FreeWebs, go to Freewebs.com - Free website, free hosting, free webpage, online photo album, free blog, more! - Their website... And register a new account. Your user name will be the name of your site, with the freewebs hosting statement in front of it. You will be run threw a website setup program. You will have to choose a template, and put your site in a category. You will have to go to your email address and confirm your account. Then go back to FreeWebs and log in with the user name and password for the account you just created.
First off click on the link called Site Manager. You will be taken to a new page.
Now click on the link called edit site titles & image and edit the name of your site. For the picture part, if you created a picture, then upload and click save changes. *Some of the templates do not let up use a picture with your site title.*
Now you can start editing your site. Just click the file called index and you will be taken to your homepage. You need to edit the information. You should get the hang of it once you are on FreeWebs. Here is a site I am currently working on, it will show you some basics you can do. <-Click Here->
VIII. Creating A Forum For Your Server.
If your site gets a lot of attention, you might want to add forums to allow your players to interact with one another out of the game, and get feedback from your server.
There are tons of sites on where you can get forums, I will list two of my favorites.
1.) - SMF For Free Server 2 Installer - Providing Free Simple Machines Forum Hosting A community forum, very easy to customize, and create.
2.) - InvisionFree (Free message board hosting) A grate forum, very customizable.
For the first choice, when you click the link, just fill in the information, and click create. It will rederict you to your forums. From there click on admin control pannel, and go about updating/editing your forums.
To add your forums to your website, copy the link, go to site manager on FreeWebs, and click add link on navbar. For the url address, paste the url your just copied, and for the name use Forums.
Invision Free is another grate forum. Go to their site, and click create a forum. Fill out the required information. Then click submit, and confirm your email. Then go to the url of your forums, and edit it from there.
*Frequently asked questions* I will post a few, if I get some more I will add them.
1. When I compile it says cannot find javac? What do I do?
Answer > Make sure you redo the section on variables, and have Java 1.6.0 The compile is saying that you either do not have the correct java version, or you did not set the Variables correctly.
2. I set up no-ip and the face become a smiley face, but only I can get on my server? Why?
Answer > First make sure you set an exception in the Firewall, as 43594. If you did that correctly, then you need to port forward. Just follow my tutorial on port forwarding.
3. I can't find my router's name, what do I do?
Answer > Tell me what is the brand of your router, ex. Motorola, Linksys, ect...
If all goes well, and I know it will not, then I should only get replies of how much this guide helped people. But I know people will get confused, even though I now spent a total of 7+ hours! on this guide, including the time it took me to completely redo it. Anyways if you get stuck or have a question just post it, I will try to get back to you within in one day/twenty four hours. Hope this helps. ^^ yes finished!
